A substation is a place where transformers lower the voltage of electricity before it is sent through power lines to our homes.

Substations contain; power transformers (to increase or decrease the voltage of the electricity), switching devices such as circuit breakers, disconnectors which will cut the power if there is a problem, and measurement, protection and control devices. All of this equipment ensures that the substation runs safely and efficiently.

Substations come in all shapes and sizes!

Here are some examples of substations you may see in your neighbourhood.
